Storing Gear

The most basic storage on a ute is on the back of a metal tray. Many of these have sides, but a lot of them don’t. Either way, anything in the back of a ute must be tied down and secured unless you have a canopy fitted. This can be a real inconvenience, as it takes quite a lot of time to tie everything down. The other issue is the weather that can get into a utes storage space. If you don’t have a canopy, expect everything on the tray to get wet, and damaged by the sun.

On the other hand, you have less restrictions for space; if you want to take a motorbike or other large item on the back of the ute you don’t have to worry about height restrictions. This is why a lot of people don’t bother about fitting a canopy. There are a number of canopies available; fibreglass, steel, canvas and aluminum. Some are removable, and some are permanently bolted down. If you have the ute covered over, it becomes easier to set up the inside of the ute permanently.

Drawers are a common addition to utes, to ensure that the gear being stored can be organised properly. A lot of things can be mounted inside a canopy, including fridges and freezers, beds and anything else that makes your travel comfortable.

One thing to consider about ute storage is the type of tray. Some are wellbody, meaning that they are panel material, and considerably larger than normal flat, steel trays. I prefer the flat steel trays, because they allow more room underneath the vehicle to mount water containers, toolboxes, spare wheels and anything else you need to store.

Tricks Use Maxtrax

If you are stuck in sand, simply remove them from their storage location (a lot of people mount them on roof racks with the supplied mounts), dig some of the sand out of the way and put them as far under the wheels as possible. Maxtrax have the ability to be used as a shovel, making life very easy. Once you have a pair (make sure they are used on the same axle or you will get crossed up) under the wheels, gently accelerate until the vehicle grabs the Maxtrax and goes forward. These can be used in forward or reverse motions, and if you have a second set can be used together (1 on each wheel).

There are a number of alternatives to Maxtrax, but you get what you pay for. In mud, Maxtrax also works exceptionally well. Simply move a bit of the mud out of the way (or just jam them under the tyres) and you are set to go. The advantage of storing these on top of your vehicles is that when they are dirty, you don’t have to put them in your car!

Maxtrax come in a number of colours, and can be mounted on the rear tyre, roof racks or inside the vehicle. If you have a dual cab ute its often easy to mount them up against the canopy. If you are going to use the conventional methods of recovering a vehicle (with a snatch strap, tow rope or winch) make sure you always think twice about your safety.

When recovering a stuck vehicle, there are a number of things that can break, creating fast flying object. Snatch straps in particular will take anything they are attached to and shoot it through the air faster than you can see. Dampeners are vital, as they limit how far the strap or cable will go through the air. The advantage of Maxtrax though, is the fact that you don’t have to worry about something breaking or going wrong. You are guaranteed a safe, quick and easy recovery!

Repaint Jeep Wheels

The first thing is removing the Jeep wheels in pairs. Untie the lug nuts on the front wheels and lift the jeep with a car lift. Ensure the jack is securely standing on the vehicle. Lower the Jeep lifts until an equal weight is distributed between the lift and jack stands.

Use the 400-grit sandpaper to sand the Wheels, rub as if you are washing the Jeep. Ensure you keep the sandpaper wet the entire time. Use water from a bucket or running water hose pipe. The water is usually used to keep build-up of the old paint from scratching into the surface of the wheel. Sand the surface until the wheel feels smooth to the hand. Remove any rough spots and any scratches or surface rust.

After removing the dirt apply degreaser. Once applied, wash the Jeep wheel off with water. Allow the wheel ample time to dry completely. Apply masking tape on the tires sidewall and also around the tire’s valve stem this is to limit the overspray from the paint. Ensure that no parts of the wheel are masked. Use the adhesive promoter and spray the primer in light thin coats so that it fills all parts of the wheel. Each coat should be sprayed within two to three minutes. Let it dry.

Use the 1200-grit sand paper and wipe the Jeep wheel down. Sand down any areas which were contaminated. If necessary, you can reapply the primer. Wash this area with water after final sanding. Then, use rubbing alcohol and a cloth to clean the entire area.

Finally, you spray the wheel with colour coat rim paint. Apply two to three light coats, this limits dripping of the paint. Ensure you keep the nozzle eight to twelve inches away from the wheel surface and also apply in a back to forth motion. Allow the paint to dry for at least 30 minutes and remove the masking tape.

Having a 4WD

Most awnings on the side of the vehicle are 2.5 metres x 2 metres, or 2 metres by 2 metres. The longer side is usually the one running length ways along your vehicle, so make sure you measure to see which is going to sit the best. These things are great, and incredibly cheap. In fact, you can get a good quality one for under $300, and fit it in around an hour.

4WD Awnings are designed to be set up by one person, and very quickly. The procedure normally involves unzipping the case, un-clipping the supports, rolling the awning out and standing the legs up. The legs are incorporated inside the aluminium frame that the awning rolls out of. Stand them up, attach the supports and if it is windy, put a few pegs in the ground with guy ropes going to the awning. I usually suggest that pegging it down is a good idea, as a gust of wind will pick the whole thing up, and dump it on your vehicle. This often results in panel damage!

4WD Awnings are completely weather proof; I have had a puddle of water build up on our awning when it was raining severely, and not a drop came through. Whether its a quick bite of lunch that you are after, or you want to sleep under the awning, they are a brilliant idea. You can get Awnings that pull out from the rear of the vehicle, and awnings that will cover all 3 sides of the vehicle. Expect to pay a considerably higher amount for these, but if they suit your purposes then that is great!

A number of accessories can be purchased for 4WD awnings, including bug proof sides, or solid sides allowing you to turn the awning into a tent on the side of the vehicle. For about the same cost as you would pay for a normal tent, you can have a big one, attached to your vehicle!

Install Cold Air Intake

1. Make sure your car is in park and the engine turned off before you start the installation. The emergency brake should also be engaged and the battery’s negative cable disconnected at the hood.

2. Use the flat-head screwdriver to remove clamps that are found around the hose intake on the engine’s throttle body. The screw driver will help make loose the screws that hold the clamp secure.

3. Use the Torx wrench to remove from the cold air tube, the mass air flow unit. The Philips screwdriver or the flat-head can also be used for this job. The sensor can be damaged when removing the mass air flow unit so caution should be taken.

4. Take the air box apart by unclasping the latches on it. The air box should then be removed completely from the engine bay. After this the stock air filter should be located and removed.

5. At the end of the intake tube connecting to the throttle body, insert a coupling. The other end should then be placed over the body of the throttle. The intake should be moved very close to the throttle body.

6. At the designated spot on the tube the mass air flow unit should be inserted. Use the torx wrench, the flat-head screw driver or the Philips to secure the screws on the mass air flow unit. The mass air flow unit should face the correct direction. An arrow on the mass air flow unit will direct you on the designated direction that it should be placed.

7. On the intake tube’s other end connect the air filter. A clamp should be used to tie down to the intake tube, the filter. To ensure the clamp is safely secured to the intake tube and air filters, use the flat head screw driver. You can use additional tie downs to make sure the intake tube and air filter is secured and in place. The intake tube and the air filters should be some distance from moving parts and the engine.

Things Before Buying An SUV

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The compact SUVs have a single rear seat and offer seating capacity of at least five adults. Mid-size SUVs usually have a single rear seat, but the larger ones can have an extra rear seat. As a result, the larger ones can offer seating capacity of at least eight adults. The full-size SUVs have two rear seats and offer seating capacity of at least eight adults.

You can fold and remove the rear seats to make room for more cargo. The compact ones have maximum capacity of 70 cubic feet. The mid-size ones have maximum capacity of 100 cubic feet. The full-size ones have capacity of more than 100 cubic feet.

Luxury and Safety

Regardless of the group, SUVs have similar features when it comes to convenience and luxury. Some of the most popular features are special storage bins, rear-seat entertainment systems, keyless start systems and Bluetooth capability, navigation systems, iPod interfaces, heated seats, and automatic climate control.

SUV manufacturers make sure that there is no compromise with passenger safety. Apart from the strong and sturdy frames, SUVs also come with features like stability control, side curtain airbags, front-seat side airbags, and anti-lock brakes.

Storage

An SUV is bigger than normal cars, but not big enough to cause problems. However, there is an issue to store it if there is another car inside your garage. In such a case, you can install a SUV lift that uses the vertical space of a garage. This lift makes sure that two cars (one of them is an SUV) can get easily parked using the floor space of only one vehicle.

SUV Safety Changed

From Small Truck To Big Car

One of the biggest changes manufacturers made is hard to notice at first glance. Originally built on traditional truck frames, most SUVs now ride on a form of adapted car chassis, lowering the centre of gravity, improving handling and stability and even reducing the weight. This one, albeit fairly substantial, change has proven to nearly eliminate rollovers, the most dangerous problem once faced by SUV drivers.

SUVs: Smarter Than Ever

The other major contributor to the modern SUV’s enhanced stability is the advent of advanced, computer-based electrical systems intended to detect and react to potential rollover situations. Many manufacturers have implemented specific anti-rollover technology that can sense when the vehicle is listing too much to one side and adjust break pressure and engine speed to avoid an accident.

More Interior Space Means More Airbags

While multiple airbag systems have become a common feature on many vehicles, the sheer amount of open space inside an SUV makes extended airbag coverage all the more vital. Airbags aren’t just found in the steering wheel and dashboard anymore, full-length side curtain, seat mounted side impact and even drivers side knee airbags all help reduce the likelihood of injury in a collision, technology that simply wasn’t in place when SUVs first hit the road.

Structural Changes Have Made Everyone Safer

But what about the safety of other drivers? One of the major contributors to SUV related fatalities was collisions with other, often much smaller vehicles. Solving the problem of the inherent increased weight and size of SUVs fell to changing the geometry of the vehicle itself. Lowered ride height and adjustments to the frame and body design, as well as advances in crumple zone and energy distribution technology, have put SUVs in line with other cars when it comes to collision performance, making them safer for those inside and out.
